The “Annapurne Sadapurne” shloka is a prayer to Goddess Annapurna, asking her for the “alms” of knowledge and detachment. The Sanskrit verse translates to: “O Annapurna, who is ever full, beloved of Shankara! O Parvati, grant me the alms for the attainment of knowledge and renunciation”. It is often recited as a mealtime prayer to express gratitude for nourishment and seek spiritual wisdom. 

The shloka
  • Sanskrit: अन्नपूर्णे सदापूर्णे, शङ्कर प्राणवल्लभे । ज्ञान वैराग्य सिद्ध्यर्थं, भिक्षां देहि च पार्वति ॥
  • Transliteration: Annapūrṇe sadāpūrṇe, śaṅkara prāṇavallabhe. Jñāna vairāgya sidhyarthaṃ, bhikṣāṃ dehica pārvati. 
English translation
  • “O Annapurna, who is ever full, beloved of Shankara!
  • O Parvati, grant me the alms for the attainment of knowledge and renunciation.” 
Meaning and context
  • Annapurne: The name signifies “full of food,” representing the goddess of nourishment and sustenance.
  • Sadapurne: Means “ever full,” highlighting her inexhaustible ability to provide for all beings.
  • Shankara prana vallabhe: Addresses her as the beloved of Lord Shiva (Shankara).
  • Bhiksham dehi: Asks for the “alms” or gift of knowledge (jnana) and detachment (vairagya).
  • This prayer is often used before meals to show gratitude for food and to ask for spiritual nourishment
